The NSW Government has selected Sydney-based technology consultancy Adaptovate for an innovative planning initiative to use artificial intelligence to tackle the housing crisis.
The $5.6 million trial will include the company’s ‘Development Assessment Intelligence System’ (DAISY) to speed up and streamline the process of assessing local council development applications.
Adaptovate is one of three organizations so far named to the state’s AI Solutions Panel put together by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, along with PropTech software start-ups Archistar and PropCode.
“Our DAISY system will help councils reduce the average development assessment time by helping applicants quickly and easily access relevant information and then identify administration and data entry errors, enabling councils to scale their development application process to meet NSW requirements,” said the executive director of Adapt. Douglas Ross.
A Boston Consulting Group principal, Ross co-founded Adaptovate with fellow BCG consultants Alex Rebkowski and Paul McNamara in 2016, and the agile-minded firm has now grown to around 150 professionals across ten offices in Australia, Singapore, the UK, Europe , Canada and the USA.
For the exam, participating councils will deploy DAISY as a browser-based tool that will provide applicants with personalized site-specific guidance updated with AI to pull relevant data such as applicable legislation. They will also assess whether all necessary documentation has been completed prior to submission.
The idea is that while saving council hours and streamlining the planning process, more and better quality building applications can be approved in a shorter timeframe, hopefully leading to more affordable housing based on increased supply.
The NSW Government has previously been recognized as a global leader in digital services.
