McConnell Dowell used Lysander to provide leadership and cultural programs in Australia and the Asia Pacific.

Founded in 1961, McConnell Dowell is a professional engineering and construction group with approximately 3,600 employees working from offices in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. The Hawthorn-based professional services firm has been part of Aveng (listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange) since 2003.

McConnell Dowell has engaged culture change consultancy Lysander to support the successful delivery of two of its transport infrastructure projects in Melbourne.

As part of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road upgrade in Melbourne’s South East Growth Corridor, Lysander will supply its ‘Integrated Approach to Wellness’ solution to the 22 assigned leaders at McConnell Dowell for the project.

The Melbourne-based consultancy has also been asked to deliver a leadership and culture program for the upgrade of the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road, a key transport route in Melbourne’s outer south-east growth corridor.

“An Integrated Approach to Wellness is the industry’s first program specifically designed for infrastructure and construction to promote positive mental health and prevent mental injury by changing workplace culture and practice,” explained Kerrie Adaway, director and owner of Lysander.

McConnell Dowell piloted the program at the Mordialloc Freeway Joint Venture with WorkSafe Victoria, Decmil and Swinburne University of Technology with great success – the program led to a 46% improvement in depression, 34% improvement in stress and 41% improvement in burnout over 12 months.

“We are therefore pleased to build on the pilot project and continue our partnership with McConnell Dowell,” Adaway said.

Scott Cummins, CEO of McConnell Dowell, added: “We have seen real changes in individual and leadership development that have been profound and impactful. I look forward to the same transformation in our teams on the Narre Warren-Cranbourne and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup projects.”

Elsewhere within the engineering group, Lysander was hired to deliver coaching sessions and team cohesion workshops with team members in McConnell Dowell’s New Zealand and Singapore offices.
