Australian tech entrepreneurs are being invited to enter the latest KPMG Tech Innovator competition, with the local competition winner competing against innovators from over 25 countries in the global final.
The third year of the Tech Innovator competition is underway, with the overall winner given the chance to compete for the global crown at this year’s Web Summit in Lisbon.
The consultancy is calling for Australian entrepreneurs who run either pure technology companies or otherwise tech-based, tech-driven or tech-led businesses. The competition is an initiative of KPMG’s High Growth Ventures department, led by Amanda Price.
To be eligible, companies must be registered in Australia, have been operating for less than five years and currently generate between $1 million and $15 million in revenue (or have raised at least $500,000 in equity) and must not be majority. – owned by a large company.
In addition, selected participants must be available to participate in the national finals in July, the winner of which will compete at the Web Summit in November against the other finalists.
This year’s annual summit in Lisbon is expected to attract 70,000 investors, founders, policy makers and industry professionals in a packed three-day program with speaking opportunities, networking events and a booth open to Australian competition winners.
Participants will also receive national exposure throughout the competition through KPMG’s media channels, as well as the opportunity to network with key industry experts and peers from technology companies.
The firm says successful applicants are typically those transitioning from a start-up to the next stage of growth with innovative proven technologies and a robust business model.
A panel of expert judges will consider six key criteria; disruption and innovation, market potential and traction, customer adoption, marketing, long-term potential and quality of presentations, with offerings delivered to an audience of early stage advisors, venture capitalists and last year’s Goterra competition winner.
“Being recognized by the KPMG Tech Innovator Award Australia was extremely important to us as a team,” said Olympia Yarga, founder and CEO of the waste management start-up. “Creating a world-first technology that has never been created before is difficult – there is no blueprint or manual to follow; we innovate and engineer to find the best solution as we go. To be celebrated for that and to meet so many people outside of Goterra who want us to succeed was special.”
Together with the KPMG High Growth Ventures team – which has backed over 200 start-ups since its inception in 2017, including the likes of Canva – KPMG also currently manages two other tech innovation competitions in Australia; its Future Technology accelerator program together with Stone & Chalk, which this year focuses on start-ups in the space sector, and the Nature Positive Challenge, now extended to companies operating in the South Pacific.
