Deakin University has teamed up with global technology provider Infosys in a new research, innovation and skills development partnership to be based in Geelong.
Global technology services and consulting firm Infosys and Victoria’s Deakin University have agreed a new partnership that will see Infosys bring its ‘Living Labs’ concept to Deakin’s Geelong campus. Meanwhile, the pair will look to explore commercial opportunities through DeakinCo, the university’s training and workplace consultancy arm.
“This is the best co-innovation and demonstrates our continued investment in supporting innovation and building digital skills in Victoria,” said Infosys Vice President and Regional Director of Supply and Operations Ashok Mysore, who was present at the signing along with Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin and Michelle Wade , South Asia Commissioner for the state government’s trade agency Global Victoria.
Infosys describes its Living Labs model as “innovation as a service” – an ongoing engagement that combines strong design skills with business and emerging technologies to help clients innovate at scale, with support in areas such as trend recognition, ideation, end-user input and rapid prototyping.
In 2019, the firm chose Melbourne for its first dedicated 5G Living Lab based outside India.
According to a press release, through its Living Lab, Infosys will particularly contribute to Geelong-based Deakin’s innovation ecosystem in the areas of energy, utilities, ICT and smart manufacturing working with incubators and research projects – with a focus on bringing new solutions to market. The parties intend to submit a co-investment proposal to the state government soon to support the new venture.
Another component of the deal will focus on digital skills, aimed at developing “talent for the ICT, digital and consultancy sectors in consultation with the Victorian Government”. In addition, Deakin will award PhD scholarships in coordination with Infosys in specific areas of mutual interest, with Infosys providing employment and internship opportunities for Deakin alumni and students.
“The establishment of Infosys Living Labs in regional Victoria is another step forward for the university and the region and will help develop the local community through the creation of new products and services and improved employment opportunities,” said Vice-Chancellor Martin. Deakin, we are proud of the strength of our industry collaboration and our openness to new ideas and ways of doing things.”
